A Thin Place

The St Cuthbert's Centre on Holy Island is one of the treasures of our Synod. Yet it remains the case that more people visit from beyond the region than we ourselves do.

At our last synod meeting Centre Director Barry Hutchinson urged synod churches to make more use of what is on offer at Holy Island - and come to see it and appreciate it as it is by others. Here is an "outsider's" view of the Centre - a piece by Diane Farquhar which first appeared in the autumn 2006 edition of the GEAR magazine "In GEAR"

St Cuthbert's Centre -

a URC mission to spiritual seekers in the cradle of English Christianity

Holy Island, off the coast of Northumbria, is often described as a 'thin place'- a place where the dividing line between earth and heaven is unusually narrow.

When you get there, you can see why. The skies are big and dramatic; the glory of God's creation stands out; and the rhythm of the tides dictates your access to the comfort and security of the mainland - God is in control. The island is also steeped in Christian history and the prayers of the saints. It was the mission base for St Aidan, known as the 'Apostle of England', in the seventh century, and for his successor, Cuthbert.

Many people go there in search of answers to their spiritual needs and desires, and the Christians on the island are working together to welcome seekers and accompany them in their journey.

The former Presbyterian Church on the island was converted into St Cuthbert's Centre in the 1990s, and its ministry continues to develop. Visitors can drop in at any time between morning prayers and dusk, and encounter Christian spirituality in their own way - or simply enjoy the hospitality of the Centre.

Visitors can leave requests on the prayer tree - and these are included in the gathered prayer times. They can pick up prayer walk leaflets which enable them to open themselves to God as they explore the island, or join a guided walk. There is also a tiny Boiler Room Chapel which is permanently open.

The former vestry is now a one person flat, the Bothy, which is ideal for a private retreat. Centre Director Barry Hutchinson is available to give spiritual direction on request. Some who stay also help with stewarding the Centre.

This is frontline mission, meeting people where they are and showing them the way of Christ. It's a place to become still before God and listen to him, and be changed by him. It's a place to 'catch a vision'!
