See too Responsibility - Celebrating the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"Circumstances"

In the circumstances -
I mean the kiss
The cockcrow
False evidence
The spit and the blindfold
And the hands dripping over the bowl -
In the circumstances
The nails
Weren't really necessary.

Rodney Ward

Written for a service of Stations of the Cross and later published in
"Aspects of Faith" by Arrival Press, 1992.

"Good Friday"

Friday
Dull as a ditch
Springs fleeting smile withdrawn.

I had a seed.
It was sown in a tomb
On this day.

This seed - my hope -
Was nurtured with love's
Fragility.

Hope struggled -
The dead lie
Perfectly still.

In the ground
The seed stirs
Touched by earth's warmth.

But my seed
Sealed by a rock
Is stone dead.

Hope
Is turned to dread
On this dreary day.

The Resuurection
Has begun
In death.

Rodney Ward
Minister at Berwick & Horncliffe
