Celebrating John Oman

Reckoned at the time of his death 70 years ago to be “amongst the most original, independent, and impressive theologians of his generation and of his country” John Oman is best remembered now for the two books Grace and Personality, in which he teaches that God is personal and always treats us as persons, and The Natural and Supernatural, in which he argues that all people have a felt awareness of God that prompts faith.

However here in the North East there may be more personal reasons for remembering this former Principal of Westminster College, because he spent 19 years working at Clayport Church, Alnwick – now incorporated in St James’s – before moving to Cambridge.

An anniversary conference is to be held at Westminster College September 15-17 at which speakers who include George Newlands, Steve Bevans, John Thompson and Alan Sell are expected to generate some fascinating insights into the theology of the early 20th Century.

Details and a booking form are being included in the June synod mailing, or may be downloaded here.
