the Rt Hon Sir Alan Beith, MP

on the subject of Rehabilitation Punishment and Cutting Crime

Sir Alan Beith was born on 20th April 1943 and educated at King's School, Macclesfield and Balliol and Nuffield Colleges, Oxford. Prior to his election as an MP he was a Lecturer in Politics at the Univeisity of Newcastle upon Tyne. Sir Alan has been awarded Honorary Doctorates in Civil Law by both the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the University of Northumbria.

Sir Alan was elected as a Member of Parliament for Berwick upon Tweed constituency at a by-election in November 1973.He served as a member of the Intelligence and Security Committee from 1994 until November 2008.

Sir Alan was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2008 having been appointed to the Privy Couniil in June 1992. Apart from working hard for his constituents he is now a member of the Privy Council Review of Intercept as Evidence and presently Chairman of the Justice Committee ofthe House of Commons, and of the Liaison committee.
