FELLOWSHIP GROUPS

Many of our groups have a number of members who do not attend St John's for worship so feel free to come along even if you do not come to church. Please check exact details as they may have changed since this was produced! We also hold other events throughout the year, eg, coffee mornings, sales, faith suppers, etc.

 

ACTIVITIES

Monday

Senior Citizens' Club
Time : 1.30 - 4.00pm (excluding Bank Holidays and August)

This club is for older people looking for companionship and regular outings. Activities include lively conversation, bingo, tea drinking (included in the small weekly fee). During the summer there is an outing most months and in the winter Christmas is celebrated by going out for lunch and having a party with carols. Some members go on holiday together.

Ladies' Work Party
Time : 2.00 - 4.00pm Fortnightly

One of the aims of the party is fund raising. The group supports appeals such as Oxfam and other charities.

Tuesday

Carpet Bowls Club
Time : 7.00 - 10.00pm. September to May.
Contact : Bob Davis (0191) 236 2275
Subscription : £7 per annum plus 75p nightly (including refreshments).
The game requires skill with a bit of luck thrown in! It is suitable for all ages. This club plays against similar clubs in the North East in friendly matches, also more serious tournaments where trophies can be won. There are also competitions between members for trophies which are presented at the end of the season.

Wednesday

Coffee Break
Time : 10.00am - 11.00am

A purely informal social group for all. Come along and enjoy a chat with friends. All proceeds to Children's Charities.

11.00 am Midweek Service

Men's Group
Time: 7.30pm First Wednesday of the month:
A time for men of the congregation and others to meet together socially.
The meeting is usually addressed by a guest speaker, eg, Prison Warder, Magistrate, Rabbi, Sikh, Male Nurse, etc.
We also visit interesting places during the spring and summer months.
All men are welcome to join us.

Thursday

Women's Fellowship
Time : 2.00 - 4.00pm. Second and fourth in the month - September to June

Meetings begin with Devotions and then there is usually a speaker, eg, Deep Sea Fishermen's Mission, National Trust, etc. The group donates money to the charity of the speaker's choice, also the Sanderson Children's appeal and St Oswald's Hospice. Five times in the year there is a Holy Devotion meeting, often led by the Minister. The group share a meal during the Summer.

Hand Crafted Cards Class
Time : 1.00 - 3.00pm, First and Third in the month

Members of this informal group enjoy producing cards, pictures, etc, using this paper moulding craft.

Ladies Leisure Group
Time : 7.30 - 9.30pm. First in the month - not July and August

Cost : £1 per evening (including tea and biscuits)
Programme includes activities such as slide shows, speakers, demonstrations, musical evenings We support a different charity every year.

Friday

Lunch Club (fortnightly)
Time : 12.00noon - 1.30pm

This group prepares and serves lunch for elderly people in the community.

John's Singers (Ladies' choir)
Time : 7.15 - 9.00pm

Cost : £1.50 per evening
Three-part singing is the group's speciality and some members are also solo, duet and quartet singers, monologue readers and instrumentalists. The repertoire covers everything from sacred to secular music (some arranged by Stewart Blake, their accompanist). Venues for concerts include St John's, sheltered accommodations, Weddings, Ladies organisations, Masonic dinners, etc.

To be a Ranger you must be at least 14 years old and can stay until you are 25. The Ranger programme is self-motivating and caters for young women from all walks of life. You may work at your own pace either as an individual or with the group. Subscriptions are £1 per meeting and at present an annual subscription fee of £9 is payable to the Guide Association. There is no waiting list for Rangers and we would be glad for you to join us.
