Pentecost Sunday 2005 was celebrated ecumenically and with joy on Holy Island as members of the churches and Christian communities gathered together in one place.
In the Parish Church of St Mary's they declared themselves to be working together for the Kingdom of God, as their representatives offered to one another their Mission Statements.
Preacher at the Parish Eucharist was Canon Clive Price, ecumenical officer for the Diocese of Newcastle, who challenged the congregation to consider how they might be seen to be working together by all who come on their own pilgirm journeys to the island. He also reminded them, as he recalled the Pentecost story, of how hard it is for us to talk in a language that people of today understand.
The representatives then declared "We offer and accept these Mission Statements as a sign that we honour our various traditions and recognise God's call of service to each of them on Holy Island. We intend, by the grace of God, to work together for increasing cooperation which reflects our common faith in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”
Barry Hutchings, minister of the St Cuthbert's Centre, presented the following statement on behalf of the United Reformed Church:
By God's grace, in cooperation with all Christians on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, we are inspired by the life of Saint Cuthbert to provide ministry under the five themes of Hospitality, Teaching, Solitude, Reconciliation and Worship.
Others sharing their own statements were St Aidan's Roman Catholic Church, St Mary's Church of England, Marygate House, and The Community of Aidan and Hilda.
